Chips Guide

Chips are a dedicated unit-mod layer in Five Nights TD 2. Every keeper can equip one Chip A and one Chip B, then stack a matching pair for a named synergy while soldering irons and Tokens polish the substats. Chips sit beside Workshop Enchantments and inventory Bytes in the Mods area, but they are not the same system—confusing the three is the fastest way to waste Tokens, Souls, and Custom Night time. Use this page with the live Tier List Hub and the comps in Best Teams so you chip the units that actually stay on your boards.

What Chips are (and are not)

Think of Chips as droppable, slot-locked modules tied to story Games 1–6. Each Chip belongs to either slot A or slot B and can only go into that slot. A unit therefore never wears two A chips—your loadout is always one A plus one B. Rarity (Rare → Epic → Mythic → Secret → Nightmare) scales how hard the chip’s numbers hit; high-rarity copies make lower-rarity duplicates of the same family less important once you own enough Nightmare or Secret pieces.

Chips are not Enchants. Enchants are Soul-gated Workshop rolls that stamp a single permanent line (Damage III, Haywire, Investor, Puppetnightmare, and so on) onto a unit. You cannot farm an Enchant from Night 7, and soldering irons do not reroll Workshop enchants. Spend Souls on enchants using the Enchantments guide; spend Custom Night clears and soldering irons on chips.

Chips are not Bytes. Bytes (often shown near Chips in the Mods UI) are a separate mod track with their own obtain and equip rules. When players say “mod the unit,” clarify whether they mean Bytes, Chips, or Workshop enchants—each has a different currency sink. For Bytes-focused farming and equip notes, see the dedicated Bytes guide once you are ready to stack that layer on top of chips.

How to obtain Chips

Chips drop from Custom Night / Night 7 content unlocked after you clear the six story nights of a game. Community and patch notes commonly cite:

  • Roughly a 30% chance to obtain a Chip from the matching game when you clear eligible Custom Night runs (difficulty 2+; higher difficulties are still preferred for reward quality).
  • A 50/50 roll between Chip A and Chip B when a chip drops.
  • Rarity odds that skew toward Rare/Epic more often, with Secret and Nightmare as the chase tiers.
  • Occasional soldering iron drops (often cited near a 10% night clear chance) so you can reroll chip substat types later.

Each Game awards its own chip family. The core names players farm are:

GameChip familyTypical focus
Game 1Overwhelming PowerRaw damage and in-range pressure
Game 2Weak PointCrit / vulnerability style pressure
Game 3Rapid StrikesCooldown and follow-up damage
Game 4Eye AugmentationCrit damage and precision scaling
Game 5Crowd ControlAoE / multi-target support
Game 6Blazing FireFire / DoT oriented kits

Exact passive text can shift after balance patches—always read the in-game tooltip before you burn Tokens upgrading a chip you no longer want. Community grind videos often prioritize Eye Augmentation and Overwhelming Power for general DPS keepers; Rapid Strikes shines on ability-tempo units; Crowd Control and Blazing Fire matter more when your Best Teams comps lean on AoE or DoT cores.

A/B slots and matching synergies

Synergy is the reason chip names matter. Equip the same family in A and B (for example Overwhelming Power A + Overwhelming Power B) to unlock that family’s bonus effect. Mismatched pairs still grant their individual stats, but you leave the named synergy on the table. That is why veterans farm both letter variants of one family for a carry instead of mixing six unrelated rares.

Practical equip rules:

  1. Pick the chip family that matches the unit’s job (damage carry, crit nuker, follow-up spammer, AoE clearer).
  2. Farm until you own both A and B of that family at usable rarity.
  3. Equip the pair, then upgrade and solder the copy you intend to keep long-term.
  4. Park leftovers as trade bait or as backups when a patch nerfs one family.

Do not chip every Toy filler. Feed and evolve first, lock Workshop enchants on true keepers, then invest Custom Night time into the six units that appear in your story, Endless, and PvP boards.

Main stats, substats, Tokens, and soldering irons

Each chip shows a main stat (stronger effect) plus several substats (crit chance, crit damage, follow-up damage, DoT, buff potency, range-adjacent lines, and similar combat modifiers). Upgrading with Tokens raises the numeric multipliers on the chip. Critically, Token upgrades do not freely rewrite which substat types you rolled—the magnitude scales, the identity of each line stays until you intervene.

Soldering irons reroll substat types while leaving the multiplier magnitude behavior intact. Lock the lines you love, then solder the junk lines. Cost climbs as more lines are locked, so decide early which two or three modifiers define the chip. A common loop is:

  1. Drop a high-rarity A/B pair of the family you want.
  2. Token-upgrade until the main line feels worth keeping.
  3. Solder undesirable substats toward crit damage, follow-up, DoT, or whatever your unit scales with.
  4. Stop soldering once the chip matches the unit’s kit—perfect fifth lines are a vanity sink.

Promo codes periodically grant Endo Chips, soldering irons, and Tokens. Redeem those before long Custom Night sessions so you can upgrade on the spot instead of banking raw drops.

Building Chips into real teams

Chips multiply units that already have a job. Cross-check roles on the tier list and loadouts in Best Teams:

  • Primary DPS — Prefer Overwhelming Power or Eye Augmentation pairs; Rapid Strikes if the kit lives on follow-ups and cooldown.
  • Ability / tempo carries — Rapid Strikes synergies plus Workshop Haywire (from Enchantments) stack tempo hard.
  • AoE / lane clear — Crowd Control pairs help when maps punish single-target tunnel vision.
  • DoT / burn kits — Blazing Fire pairs when your roster already leans that way.
  • Supports / farm — Chip last. Investor-style Workshop value and correct placement usually beat premature chip farming on Fazcade-style units.

Layer order that wastes the least currency: story clears → keeper summons → Workshop enchant → Bytes when relevant (Bytes guide) → matched Chip A/B → Token/solder polish.

Custom Night farming habits

Treat Custom Night as a targeted farm, not endless AFK fluff:

  • Unlock Night 7 per game, then farm the game whose chip family you need.
  • Use a clear-speed team you already trust from Best Teams rather than experimenting mid-farm.
  • Raise difficulty for better reward quality once clears are stable; do not spike difficulty so high that fails erase the 30% chip roll.
  • Track which letter (A vs B) you still need so you do not overfarm duplicates while the matching slot is empty.
  • Bank soldering irons for Nightmare/Secret keepers; do not solder every Rare you trip over.

If a session yields only irons or low rarities, that is still progress—irons are the bottleneck once you own the right family pair.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing A/B families and wondering why the synergy passive never appears.
  • Burning Souls trying to “enchant a chip” at the Workshop.
  • Soldering before confirming the chip family belongs on that unit.
  • Chipping temporary banners instead of the six slots you actually place.
  • Ignoring Bytes and Enchants entirely, or assuming one system replaces the others.

Master Chips as the third vertical—after team building and Workshop enchants—and your Custom Night time starts producing real DPS instead of inventory clutter.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Five TDs players on Roblox.

What are Chips in Five Nights TD 2?

Chips are slot-locked unit mods earned mainly from Custom Night. Each unit equips one Chip A and one Chip B. Matching families unlock synergy bonuses, and rarity scales the strength of the stats.

How do Chip A and Chip B slots work?

Every chip is letter-locked. An A chip only fits the A slot and a B chip only fits the B slot. Equip the same chip family in both slots to activate that family’s synergy passive.

What do soldering irons do?

Soldering irons reroll a chip’s substat types. Token upgrades raise the numeric multipliers; soldering changes which modifiers appear. Locked lines cost more irons to reroll around.

How are Chips different from Enchantments and Bytes?

Enchantments are Soul rolls at the Workshop. Bytes are a separate Mods-track system. Chips drop from Custom Night, use A/B slots, and are polished with Tokens plus soldering irons.

Which Chips should I farm first?

Farm both letters of the family that matches your main DPS—Eye Augmentation and Overwhelming Power are common generalist picks—then check Best Teams and the tier list before spreading farms across every game.

Where do Chips drop?

Clear eligible Custom Night / Night 7 runs for Games 1–6 after unlocking them in story. Expect roughly a 30% chip chance on qualifying clears, with a 50/50 A or B roll when a chip drops.
